Rooney apologises as judge orders community service and driving ban

Rooney record

September 18 – Former England captain Wayne Rooney received a two-year driving ban today after pleading guilty in a British court to drink-driving.

Rooney apologised for his “unforgivable lack of judgment” in a statement issued after he entered his guilty plea at Stockport Magistrates’ Court, near Manchester.

The 31-year-old, who switched back to his boyhood club Everton from Manchester United in the summer, was arrested in the early hours of September 1 and the court heard he was almost three times the legal limit.

In addition to the two-year driving ban, Rooney was ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.

“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career,” Rooney said.

Rooney announced in August he was retiring from international football, ending a 14-year career in which he became England’s leading scorer with 53 goals.
