February 6 – Crystal Palace’s resurgence from bottom of the league to mid-table competitiveness may have slowed in recent weeks, but the clubs’ fans still manage to find more seats to fill at Selhurst Park than the ground’s official capacity. Roy Hodgson is clearly working some kind of magic with fans in south-east London that deserted him in his last job with England.
The 26th round of Premier League fixtures saw every club in the league report stadiums over 93% of their capacities full for the second time in three rounds. Eight clubs were over 96% full. The average across the league was 97.17%.
With pretty much every club in the league still with something to play for – either a European qualification place or avoiding relegation (just seven points separate the none teams above the relegation places) – it can be expected that the last 10 games will continue to be sell-outs.
The Premier League is now closing in on the 10 million spectator mark for the season, an average of about 38,500 per match across the league.
While Crystal Palace topped the weekly attendance capacity chart, Watford, who beat Chelsea 4-1 in the Monday evening fixture, were just below Bournemouth at the bottom of the table. Of 8,016 unfilled seats, 1,420 of them were at Watford.
The Insideworldfootball attendance figures are taken from the official ground capacities and the official reported match day attendances. No allowances are made for seat kills due to media or safety requirements.
