February 7 – Italy’s Serie A has accepted Spanish’s MediaPro offer for rights to broadcast matches for the 2018-21 seasons at just above €1.05 billion.
Serie A had been in talks with MediaPro after negotiations with Sky Italia broke down. Italy’s main commercial broadcaster for sports failed to meet the €1.05 billion minimum set by the league’s advisor Infront. The new deal guarantees Serie A a near €6 billion TV revenue over the last six years, as Infront had projected when it came on board in 2014.
Domestic TV broadcasting rights for the 2015 to 2018 period in Italy reached €945 million per season. Last November Serie A also attracted the services of IMG for the sales of its international TV rights replacing Silva & MP as agency. The three-year deal is to be worth €371 million per season.
The Italian league will have to notify the Italian antitrust authority of its new deal with MediaPro before it can proceed with officially assigning the rights.
