March 1 – Last night’s FA Cup replay at Wembley’s 90,000 capacity stadium drew just 24,627 spectators for Tottenhams 6-1 thrashing of Rotherham in the snow. A far cry from the full house Wembley saw last Sunday for the Football League’s Carabao Cup final that saw Manchester City beat Arsenal 3-1.
It is feast or famine in English football. Feast if is Premier League clubs, more meagre rations for everyone else.
Manchester City are scheduled to meet Arsenal again in the league tonight – weather permitting – and it will likely be another sellout. As were most of the Premier League games in Round 28 of the season where just 6,664 seats were left unfilled.
Crystal Palace topped the Insideworldfootball stadium capacity table with just 169 unfilled seats for the visit of Spurs, Brighton were close behind with 227 seats unfilled.
Burnley and Watford were at the other end of the table but both still reporting gates over 93% of their stadium capacities. The seven teams above them all reported capacities of over 95%.
So far this season the Premier League has filled over 10.5 million seats at its grounds with just over 500,000 going unfilled.
Insideworldfootball data is taken from the official stadium capacities and the reported match attendances. No allowances are made for seat kills due to safety or media requirements.
