March 8 – Gaetano Micciché will become the new temporary president of Italy’s Serie A following an announcement by Giovanni Malago, the Italian Olympic Committee president.
The decision was approved by all 20 Serie A clubs, with the appointment set to be confirmed later this month. Micciché is presently the chairman of financial services group Banca IMI.
He will serve Serie A in a temporary role as CONI seeks to overhaul the administration in Italian football. In February, CONI appointed two of its senior executives to lead the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A to address governance issues in the sport with Roberto Fabbricini installed as extraordinary commissioner for the FIGC following its failed election process in January.
The Italian game was plunged into a crisis when the local FA was unable to elect a new president at the start of the year. None of the three candidates, the president of the Amateur League (LND) Cosimo Sibilia, the president of the third-tier Lega Pro division Gabriele Gravina and the head of the professional players’ union (AIC) Damiano Tommasi, could win the necessary votes. The farcical election follows Italy’s dramatic World Cup play-off defeat against Sweden.
Malago now has a similar position in the Serie A.
“He is a sportsman, very passionate, competent, a man of relationships, of systems and is highly esteemed,” said Malago, commenting on Micciché’s appointment.
