Chelsea and San Francisco 49ers go full STEAM ahead on educational hook-up

March 22 – NFL club San Francisco 49ers have announced an education partnership aimed at young people with Premier League Chelsea, working through their teaching focussed affiliates – the EDU Academy for the 49ers and The Chelsea Foundation.

The hook up will begin in April with a two-day clinic for youth at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge that uses programming components from 49ers EDU, which teaches youth about the concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) and how it relates to football.
The STEAM sessions in London will be aimed at children aged 10-11 and will see more than 100 children learn about the evolution of football equipment and the similarities to the equipment used in American’ football as well as the physics involved in sport and a general introduction to the NFL and the American game.

“The Chelsea Foundation’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and math has grown rapidly over the last couple of years, following the successful delivery of our Digital Camps and Digital Blue programme at Stamford Bridge,” said Matt Mead, Chelsea Foundation’s head of education.

Shortly after the work in London, the 49ers and Chelsea plan to bring similar STEAM-focused programming to San Francisco as part of the partnership.

“With the successful launch, growth, and future outlook of 49ers EDU, we’re honored to expand our education platform abroad in partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation to bring concepts of STEAM and American football to London children,” said Jesse Lovejoy, 49ers EDU director and EDU Academy managing partner. “It is not only a great partnership for EDU Academy but the beginning of a longstanding cross-continental relationship to grow education opportunities for youth in sport.”
