April 3 – Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has accused the UK and US of using the poisoning scandal to try and take the World Cup away from her country.
Speaking in a lengthy interview with a Russian TV channel, she said their “main aim” was to “take the World Cup out of Russia”.
British royals and politicians are already boycotting the tournament in the response to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter though there is no suggestion the England team will do likewise.
Speaking to Russia’s Channel 5 TV, Zakharova said: “It’s my impression that all they care about is taking the World Cup out of Russia. They will use any means. Their minds are only on that football and God forbid it should touch a Russian football field.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May has blamed the nerve agent attack on Russia which has denied any involvement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has responded by laughably suggesting May is using the issue to distract attention away from Brexit.
