April 6 – The attraction of e-sports has snared another football big name. Former Real Madrid, Liverpool and West Ham star Álvaro Arbeloa is partnering with League of Legends team Origen.
Origen is planning a return after having not competed as a team for nine months and having released all its pro players.
Arbeloa is expected to join the team as an investor and announced his participation via twitter and using #OGresurrection in the tweet.
Arbeloa is following in increasingly well trodden Spanish footsteps in the e-sports business.
Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué is president and founder of marketing agency eFootball.Pro which is the promoter of the new eSports league being launched by video game maker Konami.
eFootball.Pro have signed Barcelona as their first professional team to the league which will be played on the Pro-Evolution Soccer (PES) game. Last September Konami signed a deal with the UEFA Champions League to make its PES League World Tour 2018 the official UEFA Champions League eSports competition. The Pro2018 World Tour will hold a number of offline events starting from winter of 2017 and running until spring of 2018.
“As a player, I’m glad that my club has decided to enter eSports and joined this innovative project that we are preparing together with Konami. Barça will be able to contribute its values to the competition and I’m sure that it will be a great rival for the rest of the teams,” said Piqué.
“On our part, from eFootball.Pro we will join the club in its new adventure in this digital world and we will guide it so it gets to excite its fans as it does with the rest of sports.”
