April 13 – Peru captain Paolo Guerrero’s dreams of leading his country into the World Cup in June could be shattered if the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) appeal to increase his ban for a positive doping test is successful.
Guerrero had been suspended for a year by FIFA on December 8 after testing positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine after Peru’s 0-0 draw away to Argentina in October.
FIFA later reduced the ban to six months but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has also recieved an appeal by WADA which wants to get it back to at least a year, maybe two.
The six-month penalty imposed by FIFA would allow Guerrero, who plays for Brazilian club Falmengo, to participate in the World Cup.
In his appeal, Guerrero requests that the FIFA AC Decision be set aside and that it be replaced by a new decision in which no sanction is imposed on him. WADA, on the other hand, requests that the FIFA AC Decision be set aside and that Mr Guerrero be sanctioned with a period of ineligibility between 1 and 2 years, with any period of provisional suspension or ineligibility already served being credited against the period of ineligibility to be served.
According to CAS, two arbitration procedures have been opened but with the agreement of the parties, the procedures have been consolidated and referred to the same Panel of arbitrators who will hold a hearing with the parties at the CAS Headquarters in Lausanne on 3 May 2018.
Guerrero, whose previous clubs have included Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV and Corinthians is Peru’s all-time top goal scorer with 32 goals in 83 appearances.
