China’s CCTV breaks tradition to share Russia 2018 streaming and mobile rights with MIGU

May 25 – The digital streaming market received a significant credibility boost with the China’s MIGU being granted digital and telecoms rights from state broadcaster CCTV for the 2018 World Cup.

MIGU is a subsidiary of Chinese telecommunications group China Mobile. It will offer live streaming and on-demand videos of all 64 World Cup matches on the MIGU Video app for mobile and PC.

Rights will be shared with CNTV, the digital platform of CCTV, which will be the only digital platform in China to show the matches live.

The deal with MIGU marks a loosening of the grip traditional broadcaster rights holders have had over broadcast and content channels. China Mobile is one of the largest telecoms companies in China with billions of customers. The spread of the rights distribution also reflect the growing Chinese appetite to consume football content.

Users of China Mobile’s TV box service, Mobaihe, will also be able to watch high-definition content of all 64 games on TV.
