FIFA focusses on Ghana government to partner rebirth of national FA

June 29 – FIFA’s strict rules on government interference in the affairs of its member federations has been called into question in Ghana where reports suggest only government representatives – and not footballing officials – were called to today’s meeting in Zurich to discuss the corruption crisis in the African country.

In letter addressed to the Ghana FA, FIFA reportedly explained that GFA officials could not be a part of the meeting because of the injunction placed on the association’s activities following the television exposé into alleged bribery by former Ghanaian football boss and African powerbroker Kwesi Nyantakyi.

When the FA was dissolved by the government in the wake of the documentary, there was no public warning by FIFA about government interference. Instead FIFA banned Nyantakyi for 90 days and was apparently due to meet representatives from both sides to discuss how to get Ghanaian football back on track.

But reports in Ghana say those talks will now only be held with a government delegation including Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah.
