Qatar 2022: EFL considers winter break for Championship

August 6 – The English Championship may decide to take a break during the 2022-23 season to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar being staged in November and December – right in the middle of domestic seasons.

“It might be that we don’t play some Championship games during that period,” said English Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey.

“We have already said we need to take a look at what it actually means for our clubs. The statistics say that the majority of [EFL] players are back available after the group stage.”

England’s second tier usually breaks for international friendlies and qualifiers during the season, in line with the Premier League.

“We are going to have to consult with the clubs, and there is any number of answers that we are going to need from FIFA about being able to broadcast games during that period,” Harvey added.
