August 21 – Spain and Japan reached their maiden U-20 Womens World Cup final after eliminating hosts France and England respectively. The tournament will culminate on Friday in Vannes with the final showdown.
The Japanese were superior throughout the 90 minutes against England, sealing victory in the first half with goals in quick succession from Riko Ueki and Jun Endo. In the 22nd minute Ueki scored her fifth goal of the tournament with a low drive from inside the box. Five minutes later, Endo doubled Japan’s lead with a header. The English never mustered a real response and had just a single, dangerous effort after the break.
I came here to try and win this World Cup and to try and make history in Japanese women’s football,” said Ueki. “The key was to get a goal early in the match. That was very important for us and also important for me. I feel my goal made a difference in the match and it makes me feel very proud and positive for what I have achieved.”
In the other semi-final Spain edged hosts France in fiercely competitive game. La Rojita were made to work hard by the hosts to secure a ticket for the final. Patri Guijarro’s goal gave Spain the lead, but Aitana Bonmati’s sending off and a penalty for France complicated matters for the Spanish. Catalina Coll, however, saved the spot kick and Spain resisted a late French onslaught to ensure passage to the final.
