Ceferin confirms no PSG sanctions imminent and any Neymar deal unaffected

November 29 – UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has swept aside rumours of an impending further sanction on Paris St Germain before the end of the European transfer window on Friday.

Speculation has been growing, fuelled by the Spanish media, that PSG could be forced to sell their world record investment Neymar to Real Madrid in order to meet FFP rules.

In July UEFA announced they were re-opening the file into big-spending PSG, rekindling the threat of the Qatari-owned club being thrown out of Europe, saying the break-even requirement for the 2018 financial year would remain “under close scrutiny.”

But in an interview with Ekipa newspaper in his home country of Slovenia, Ceferin said any decision over whether PSG have again violated the rules was not imminent.

“The decision regarding PSG will be made later. It’s not true that Real Madrid are waiting on the decision,” said Ceferin.

PSG, owned by Qatar Sports Investments since 2011, has been accused of “financial doping” by outspoken La Liga president Javier Tebas in their elusive quest to finally land the Champions League. They have already been punished once for breaking FFP rules in 2014 when they were fined €60 million but insist they are now fully compliant with the regulations.

But there now seems little doubt that PSG will be in tomorrow’s Champions League draw.

Ceferin was also asked about VAR and said he was “still not convinced” by its efficacy. The system is not being used in European club competitions and Ceferin again explained why.

“There are things that are still not clear. Who decides to see VAR? The video ref or the main referee? People don’t understand it and neither do journalists. We know that one day it will be necessary to use VAR, when we are ready.”
