September 5 – David Beckham is to call his MLS franchise Club Internacional de Futbol Miami – Inter Miami CF – and has unveiled the club’s logo.
The club crest “represents Miami’s international, diverse, inclusive, creative and ambitious spirit,” said a press release, is pink, black and white, featuring two herons and a sun with seven rays which are a “homage” to Beckham’s career.
“This is such a proud day for myself and for the entire team. It’s an honour to announce the new name and crest to our fans — we are taking another important step in establishing our Club and today marks an important moment in the history of Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami,” said Beckham who as well as being an owner is president of operations.
Inter Miami will not makes its MLS debut until 2020 and before then has to secure a stadium.
In November Miami will hold a referendum to vote on whether the city should give the go-ahead for Beckham’s ownership group to build a $1 billion commercial and soccer stadium complex – named Miami Freedom Park – on the location of the city’s only municipal golf course, Melreese Country Club.
The planned development includes a 25,000-seat stadium, an exterior amphitheatre and 23 acres of public football pitches.
