MLS expands play-offs to 14-team format

December 20 – Major League Soccer is revamping its playoff format from next season to include more teams in the post season MLS Cup and end the season nearly a month earlier. 

This year 12 teams competed in the post season play-offs though with the MLS adding new franchises taking the league to 24 teams, the play-offs have been expanded to 14 teams next season.

The top seed from each conference will get a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 game in the conference semi finals.

The season will start March 2 and finish October 6 with the play-offs starting October 19. The MLS Cup final will be played November 10.
