February 22 – The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will present a number of measures to the technical council of its top league clubs to “advance” Brazilian football. They include adopting VAR in the Serie A, limiting the number of managerial changes and the introduction of a Brazilian Super Cup in 2020.
“We want to raise the level of the Brazilian Championship,” explained Rogerio Caboclo, the executive director and president elect of the CBF. “To do this, we will present to the clubs an integrated agenda, which concerns refereeing, the technical aspects of games and the public in stadiums.”
The VAR would be present in all of the 380 matches of the Brazilian top flight and the CBF would commit to bear the costs of the technology and infrastructure required to implement the video technology system, according to a CBF statement. In 2018 the clubs rejected the adoption of VAR by 12 votes to seven. Approval requires a simple majority.
The CBF also wants to limit coaching changes. The governing body wants to allow for just one managerial change per Serie A season and limit the number of registered players per club to 40. “This measure will help clubs to rationalise their management and in the medium term will reduce costs,” said Caboclo.
Finally, the CBF aims to introduce a Super Cup from next year on with the winner of the league playing the winner of the domestic cup to open the new season. The clubs will meet on Friday to consider the CBF’s proposals.
