July 12 – The vice-president of Burundi’s football federation, Aimable Habimana, has reportedly been detained on issues relating to players bonuses in the latest scandal to rock African football.
It follows the apparent disappearance of monies due to national team players who were recently in Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The BBC reports that Habimana, also known as Marandura, has been under arrest since Saturday. He was apparently arrested together with two other employees.
Burundi, which was taking part in its first Afcon finals, were eliminated in the group stage. The Swallows failed to pick up a single point, losing 1-0 to Nigeria and Madagascar respectively, before going down 2-0 to Guinea in their final group match.
Burundi are not the only Afcon-participating country to have battled with issues of player bonuses. Nigeria’s players refused to turn up for a pre-match press conference ahead of their group stage clash with Guinea while Cameroon at one stage threatened not to board the plane en route to the finals.
