July 18 – An early goal from Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria a 1-0 win over Tunisia in their third-place playoff at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Ighalo struck in the third minute in Cairo to give Nigeria, three-time winners, their eighth bronze medal in the tournament’s history (they have won every third-placed game they have competed in) though they had been widely expected to reach the final.
Ighalo, bidding to win the tournament’s Golden Boot, was later taken off with a hamstring injury as Tunisia, champions in 2004, rallied.
Senegal will look for their first Afcon title when they face 1990 winners face Algeria in Friday’s final.
