Police drop Neymar rape allegations case due to lack of evidence

July 30 – Police investigating rape allegations against Brazilian star Neymar say they have closed the case due to a lack of evidence.

Neymar has consistently denied allegations by a woman that he drunkenly assaulted her at a top Paris hotel in May.

Reports said Neymar had even published texts and photos which he said proved he was set up, claiming he was the victim of attempted extortion. In a video he says he had to make the allegations public to “prove that nothing really happened”.

“Whoever knows me, knows of my character and my nature, and knows that I would never do a thing like that … What happened is exactly the opposite of what they’re saying,” the video added.

São Paulo attorney general’s office now says the police decision to close the case will be sent to prosecutors who will then have 15 days to evaluate the ruling before a final decision will be made by a judge.

The story has gripped Brazil which recently won the Copa America without Neymar who was injured in a friendly before the tournament.
