Winds remove section of AZ Alkmaar roof

August 12 – Dutch top-flight side AZ Alkmaar suffered a partial roof collapse at their stadium on Saturday after strong winds hit the country.

AZ were not playing at the time and nobody was hurt during the incident at the ground, which opened 13 years ago.

Images captured by fans were shared online, detailing just how much damage was caused to the structure of the ground.

General manager Robert Eenhoorn said: “This surprised us all. We are very shocked but happy that there was no human suffering.”

Alkmaar are due to play the second leg of their Europa League third round qualifying match against FC Mariupol on Thursday.
