Bury cling on but EFL postpones fourth fixture

August 14 – The on-going survival saga of English League One club Bury has seen the English Football League (EFL) suspend another of their fixtures – this weekend’s home league match against Gillingham.

Bury face an August 23 deadline for owner Steve Dale to prove that they are sufficiently financed to meet the club’s commitments to football creditors, to the unsecured creditors as part of the Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), as well as show there is funding for the current 2019/20 season.

The club has already had league fixtures with MK Dons and Accrington Stanley postponed as well as a Carabao Cup fixture. A decision on whether to suspend Bury’s August 20 fixture with Rotherham United will be taken on August 15.

Failure to convince the EFL that it can service its debts and still play the season will mean expulsion expulsion from the league of which it has been a member for 125 years.

“The EFL board has suspended Bury FC’s fixture with Gillingham on Saturday 17 August 2019 as it has not received the outstanding evidence required by today’s 9am deadline,” read a statement. “The EFL has made it clear that it cannot continue suspending fixtures indefinitely and the deadline of 23 August for withdrawal of membership remains in place. However, the EFL remains committed to working with the club to try and find a successful conclusion.”
