August 22 – The eFootball.Pro League is set to expand with more clubs as well as introducing a competition for amateur players – the eFootball.Open – that will see a rebranding of the PES League.
eFootball.Pro is played on the Konami Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) game. Earlier this week UEFA announced an eSports Euro 2020 national team tournament that will be played on PES.
Last season eFootball.Pro League competed with six clubs – FC Barcelona, FC Schalke 04, AS Monaco, Celtic FC, Boavista FC and FC Nantes – in a 2v2 competition. The coming season will see each club with three professional players. 2.Football.Pro said that new club entrants would be announced in the coming weeks.
The total prize pool for the eFootball.Pro League and eFootball.Open will be $2 million.
The eFootball.Open will be played by amateur players as a 1v1 (individual) tournament. Players will choose a club to represent from those playing in the eFootball.Pro League, and will compete alongside others that selected the same team.
Jonas Lygaard, senior director – Brand & Business Development at Konami Digital Entertainment, said: “With eFootball PES 2020, we made the bold decision to reposition our brand and take bigger steps towards esports. eFootball is a clear example of the steps that we are taking to elevate the sport and allow as many users as possible, casual or professional, to get involved. Following an exciting start, we’re thrilled to see eFootball.Pro back for another season with substantial changes and additions to be unveiled soon.”
