September 12 – After the popular success of the opening weekend of the Women’s Super League (WSL), the English FA wants to capitalise on the momentum by urging fans to attend its first Women’s Football Weekend on 16-17 November, during the men’s international break.
A highlight of the weekend will Tottenham Hotspur’s hosting of Arsenal for the North London Derby at Tottenham’s new stadium.
Using the break in Premier League football for international matches, the WSL returned to action in record-breaking fashion last weekend with more than 60,000 fans across six games. The November weekend will also see Liverpool take on Merseyside neighbours Everton and Chelsea play Manchester United.
FA’s women’s professional game director, Kelly Simmons, said: “We are excited to announce the first ever Women’s Football Weekend, for what is sure to be another great moment in a year that has seen huge momentum behind the growth in popularity of women’s football.
“Following on from a record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup and opening Barclays FA Women’s Super League weekend, there has never been a better time to visit your local team, and we encourage all supporters to get involved at all levels of the pyramid on 16-17 November.”
The FA also encourages fans to visit games further down the pyramid and Crystal Palace v London City Lionesses and Durham against London Bees will be some of the fixtures on offer in the Women’s Championship, the second professional tier of the women’s game in England, where there will be a full league programme, as well as and cup games played in the lower tiers.
