Spurs appeal Son’s red card for Gomes tackle

November 5 – Tottenham Hotspur have appealed against Heung-mon Son’s red card for the tackle which led to Andre Gomes’ horrific broken ankle in Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Everton.

Son had to be consoled by teammates when he saw the severity of Portuguese midfielder’s injury, having been yellow-carded for  his challenge. He was later said to be “in shock” and was even visited in the dressing room by Everton’s Seamus Coleman, who himself suffered a crippling broken leg in March 2017.

TV replays suggested that Gomes suffered his sickening injury after and not as a result of Son’s tackle and before he collided with Tottenham full-back Serge Aurier. Yet the referee switched the initial yellow to red as a consequence of the foul only once it became clear how badly Gomes was hurt.

Explaining the referee’s decision, the Premier League said: “The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player, which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge.”

The statement drew widespread condemnation but if the appeal is not successful, the South Korean forward will miss Premier League matches against Sheffield United, West Ham and Bournemouth.

In the aftermath of the incident, a supporter was accused of racially abusing Son and Everton said in a statement: “Everton is investigating an alleged incident of racist behaviour by a supporter attending [the] fixture against Tottenham. Everton strongly condemns any form of racism. Any such behaviour has no place within our stadium, our club, our community or our game.”
