New year, same old issues. Greek FA raided by financial police

Hellenic Football Federation

January 16 – Greek football has been plunged into further controversy following a raid by local police on the headquarters of the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF).

A division of the financial investigatory authorities swooped on the building in what the HFF is describing as the kind regular control provided by law for sports federations and the HFF. The national association said it co-operated with the authorities providing all the information requested.

In a statement the HFF said: “A team of financial police, accompanied by prosecutors, came to the federation to conduct a financial audit.”

“The EPO Financial Services cooperated fully with the representatives of the State Audit, and immediately made available all the information requested regarding the financial years of 2017, 2018 and 2019, as it operates in a state of complete transparency and with full respect for the principles of good governance.”

In recent years, Greek football has been marred by infighting between club owners, chaos at matches and behind closed doors, violence and low attendances. Successive governments have defaulted on their promises to clean up the local game that has been blighted by match-fixing and ugly personal battles for control of the game.
