VAR makes its Moroccan club debut

February 19 – Morocco has become the first African country to use VAR in a top-flight league game.

The system has already been used in the Moroccan domestic cup but was featured in IRT Tangier’s recent 2-1 win over FUS Rabat in the league.

“We have installed the VAR in our stadiums. We hope this technology will be positive for the teams, fans, officials, referees, and Moroccan football in general,” said Yahya Hadqa, head of the Moroccan Arbitration Directorate.

Morocco’s football federation president, Fawzi Lekjaa, has already issued a stark warning to referees. “Those who are not qualified for this new technique will not officiate in Morocco,” he said.
