March 2 – Italy’s Serie A season runs the risk of not being completed if more matches are postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak, according to Inter Milan’s chief executive Giuseppe Marotta.
Inter’s much anticipated high-profile game at Juventus, which was to have been played on Sunday behind closed doors, was one of five postponed by Serie A in regions where sporting events have been banned by the government.
Italy is the worst affected country in Europe with 1,128 confirmed cases and 29 deaths. Both figures are expected to rise rapidly.
Serie A’s crowded fixture list means they are running out of dates to restage the games. Inter have now had two dates postponed.
“If more matches are called off then, yes, we run that risk,” Marotta told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked if the championship might not finish. “The balance of the championship has been altered. It’s a distorted tournament.”
“I am worried about Inter’s game against Sassuolo next Sunday,” added Marotta. “How do we deal with that? We can’t play behind closed doors because it would be absurd to use a measure one week that we didn’t use the week before… I can’t see a solution.”
