Real Madrid follow the esports crowd with Twitch channel

March 25 – LaLiga giants Real Madrid have expanded their digital broadcast footprint with a digital channel on Twitch.

Owned by Amazon, the video live streaming service focuses primarily on live gaming, including broadcasts of esports events.

Real Madrid’s channel launched last weekend with coverage of La Liga’s charity FIFA 20 esports tournament, which was won by their own striker Marco Asensio.

“We want to increase the scope of our content in the face of the exceptional and difficult circumstances we are experiencing,” Real said on Twitter.

As well as esports, the channel will air archive footage and has broadcast full re-run of Brazilian striker Ronaldo’s debut for Real Madrid back in 2002.

The club joins PSG and Schalke with Twitch channels, and says it is committed to building its presence in esports. Asensio’s final victory in the LaLiga tournament last weekend was viewed by 170,000 people with more than 1 million tuning in to the tournament at some point over the weekend of play.

As part of the Bernabeu redevelopment, Real Madrid says that it will incorporate a video gaming facility.
