English FA extends indefinite season suspension to cover all leagues below top four tiers

April 1 – After attracting fierce criticism for shutting down all non-league football except for its two top leagues, English football authorities have now agreed to their indefinite suspension – but still controversially leaving the door open to finish the season.

The National League and National League north and south were originally postponed until 3 April but that has now been extended.

The decision came after all non-league football from steps seven downwards in the English pyramid was ended last week with no promotion or relegation.

It is not yet known if the two higher divisions – steps 5 and 6 – will also be cancelled with all results expunged.

The National League said it was looking at “how best to conclude” the season. But the latest move will do little appease those lower down the scale who can’t play again this season.

More than 100 clubs have now sent an open letter to the FA, calling for it to “urgently” reconsider the decision to expunge seasons from the men’s seventh downwards.
