April 7 – The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has allocated $3.6 million for clubs in the lower tiers of the Brazilian football pyramid and the women’s game in a bid to mitigate the financial crisis caused by the global coronavirus outbreak.

“We’re living through an unprecedented moment of global crisis, of which the extension and consequences are still incalculable,” said CBF president Rogerio Caboclo in a statement. “It’s therefore necessary to act with reason and responsibility. Our objective with these measures is to provide direct and immediate help.”

Brazil’s governing body has decided to help 88 clubs in the third and fourth tier of the men’s leagues and the 52 teams in the top two women’s divisions.

In Serie C, the third division, every club will get $37,800. The 68 clubs in the Serie D will receive $22,700 each, the same amount that has been designated to the 16 clubs in the women’s topflight. In the second tier of the women’s game, every club is entitled to $9,460.

The CBF will also lend a  supporting hand to its member state federations, awarding each $22,700.

In addition to the financial measures, the CBF also said that clubs will be exempt from fees paid on transfers and registrations.

In Brazil, the state championships, which precede the regular season, were suspended following the outbreak of the coronavirus which has claimed more than 500 lives so far in Brazil.

The regular season has been scheduled to kick off in May, but with the numbers of confirmed cases gaining speed in Brazil it is highly unlikely that football will return early next month in the country.
