SIGA Strives 13: Integrity body and UNESCO partner to build case for government money

April 24 – UNESCO has partnered with the Sports Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) to build a ”business case for sport integrity”.

As the world rebuilds economically and socially once the Covid-19 pandemic begins to allow normal activity to resume, the two bodies are urging governments “to harness the power of Sport as a social, educational and economic catalyst for growth to act as a cornerstone of the global rebuild”.

The joint project will focus on the social and economic benefits of sports, identify the main threats to the sector and encourage governments to invest in sports integrity to protect sport.

SIGA CEO Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros this week has written to governments from UNESCO’s member States inviting them to provide data and participate in the project.

Dr Iain Lindsay, SIGA Director of Research, Knowledge and Innovation, said: “Governments must prioritise Covid-19 and its socio-economic consequences. It is crucial that sport plays a central role in global recovery. Sport is the cornerstone of all dynamic, economically robust and productive societies. A fruitful global economy uses effective investment in sport to facilitate positive financial, mental and physical health…SIGA, in close collaboration with INESCO, global governments and all associated stakeholders, are proactively shaping an investment framework to help deliver productive change in the coming restrictive financial climate.”

This initiative is 13th Boosting Measure of SIGA’s global campaign #SIGASTRIVES
