June 2 – In an unexpected development, the head of the Italian football federation (FIGC) Gabriele Gravina says limited numbers of fans could be allowed back into Serie A grounds as early as July – even though the league hasn’t even resumed yet.
It has been widely assumed across Europe that playing behind closed doors would be the norm for several months to come and there will be a limit of 300 people including players, staff, and journalists at the stadiums when Serie A returns on June 20.
There are only five days between that date and the scheduled end of the domestic season on August 2 that will not feature a game in order to cram in all remaining fixtures. But not all of them will necessarily be behind closed doors.
“It’s unthinkable that in a stadium that can hold 60,000 there’s not space for a small percentage of fans with the necessary precautions. It’s something I really wish for with all my heart,” Gravina (pictured) was quoted as saying.
“The hope is that soon there will be a re-evaluation, a week before the start of the league.”
The issue will be discussed again on June 8 in an online meeting with representatives of all Serie A sides.
“We will send a new proposal, in the hope that it can find space in the revision of the rules, which are today creating anxiety and worry in our sport,” said Gravina.
