June 8 – AXA is to become the title sponsor for the Swiss women’s league after signing a two-year deal with the Swiss Football Association (SFA).
This year, Switzerland celebrates the 50th anniversary of the domestic women’s club game, but the coronavirus pandemic dented those festivities a serious blow as the remainder of the Nationalliga A was cancelled. However, a new two-year deal with global insurer AXA could give Swiss women’s football something to cheer about.
“The SFA and AXA share a common vision: to take Swiss women’s football to the next level. Their common will is that women get the recognition they deserve in football and in sport in general,” wrote the SFA in a statement. “The partnership with AXA marks a decisive step for the future of the discipline in terms of both media and finance.”
The women’s top flight will be rebranded as the AXA Women’s Super League and the insurer will also sponsor the domestic women’s cup final.
On April 30, the Swiss women’s top flight was cancelled. League leaders Servette FCCF and Zurich were awarded the entry tickets for the Champions League. The Zurich outfit had won the title in the previous two seasons.
In Switzerland, the women’s league was established in 1970.
