June 8 – Predictions that the savage economic effect of Covid-19 on football will dramatically slow down the transfer market has seemingly had no effect on Chelsea who are reported to have pipped Liverpool to the signing of RB Leipzig sharpshooter Timo Werner.
The London club have apparently agreed a €60 million deal to sign Werner, one of the most sought-after targets in Europe who has scored 31 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions this season.
Unlike the majority of Europe’s top clubs Chelsea, banned in last summer’s window from buying players, still have the money from the monster sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, a fee that reportedly could be worth up to £130 million.
They have already signed attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech for €40 million from Ajax, stealing a march on the majority of elite clubs hit by the financial effects of Covid-19.
