June 10 – New details have emerged over how UEFA may conclude its two European club competitions in the coming weeks.
Lisbon is the favourite to host an eight-team Champions League knockout tournament from the quarterfinals onwards in August, if the plan is given the go-ahead by UEFA’s executive committee on June 17.
It has now been reported that the Champions League final itself would be staged on August 23.
Germany, where the Bundesliga restarted on May 16, is apparently favourite to stage a similar Europa League mini-tournament with venues in Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Duisberg and Dusseldorf reportedly being considered. The final, originally due to be held in Gdansk, Poland on May 27, could take place on August 21.
What is less clear is how the outstanding last-16 matches in both the Champions League and Europa League will be settled and whether UEFA will allow them to be completed on a home and away basis since some of the first-leg games have already taken place.
