20 players test positive as MLS teams gather in Florida for restart tournament

June 29 – Major League Soccer (MLS) says 20 players and six club staff have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the ‘MLS is Back Tournament’ set to begin on July 8.

Teams began arriving in Florida for the competition on Wednesday just as the entire state of Florida is experiencing a significant spike in positive tests.

“Any individual who tests positive … while in Orlando will participate in a clinical assessment by a healthcare provider and moved to the isolation area of the hotel until he or she receives medical clearance,” MLS said.

“Close contacts will also receive follow-up PCR testing and may be restricted from participating in group meals and recreational activities until cleared.”

“While in isolation, MLS players and other staff will be in daily communication with and receive remote care… including monitoring of symptoms, and regular follow-up testing.”
