July 17 – Serie A’s Roma and US sportswear giants Nike have cancelled their 10-year partnership with three years left to run on the contract.
The termination will be effective at the end of the current season.
To cover the 2020/21 season, the two have agreed a one-year deal. That agreement will seek Nike provide Roma “with all on-pitch, training and casual products for the first team, youth teams and women’s teams,” said a Roma statement.
In the meantime Roma will open discussion with other kit suppliers with Under Armour rumoured to be leading the running for the new deal.
“The early termination of the commercial agreement will allow AS Roma to explore new opportunities in the equipment and licensing space,” said AS Roma Chief Operating Officer Francesco Calvo.
Roma have long been dissatisfied with the financial return from the Nike deal. Nike’s contract was worth about €4.2 million per season but is reckoned to be delivering only half the amount of its major rivals in Serie A.
