UEFA Nations League to open behind closed doors

August – UEFA has decided no fans will be able to attend Nations League matches in September, confirming a report by the Scottish FA earlier this week.

Despite some countries apparently assuring UEFA that they are comfortable about welcoming fans back, along with government support, UEFA have erred on the side of caution.

UEFA have decided the first two rounds of the Nations League, starting next month, will take place behind closed doors following a meeting between all 55 UEFA member associations on Wednesday.

However, the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest, Hungary on September 24, has been tentatively pencilled in to accommodate a limited number of fans.

“There had been quite a lot of discussion about the potential for crowds to return but UEFA felt there should be a consistent approach for the first international window since lockdown,” said English FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham.

“We would like to get fans into Wembley again, to what level we’ve got to work out with UEFA and the Government.”

Referring specifically to  games in September, he added: “It’s a shame fans won’t be able to attend matches in person but we have great broadcast partners who will bring the games to them.”
