Sheffield Wednesday have points deduction halved

November 5 – Sheffield Wednesday have had their points deduction for breaching EFL spending rules halved from 12 to six points.

In August, the club was informed of a 12 point deduction after the league told Sheffield Wednesday it “should not have included profits from the sale of Hillsborough in financial statements for the period ending July 2018”.

A dramatic start to the new season compounded the Owls’ predicament with five defeats in ten games, but on Wednesday a league panel halved the August punishment.

In a statement the club said: “In August 2020, the club filed an appeal to a League Arbitration Panel against the decision of the EFL Disciplinary Commission to impose a sanction on the club of a deduction of 12 points in season 2020/21.”

“The club confirms that today its appeal was upheld in part. The decision of the League Arbitration Panel is that the sanction is reduced to a deduction of six points in season 2020/21.”

As it stands, Sheffield Wednesday remain bottom of the Championship on five points but just three points off being out of the relegation zone. They were boosted by a win over unbeaten Bournemouth earlier this week, just before their six point win with the EFL authorities. They host Millwall on Saturday.
