FIFA’s Mosengo-Omba tells Africa they have common aims, but CAF must clean up its act

January 27 – The next president of the African Football Confederation must be “absolutely honest”, according to FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Veron Mosengo-Omba.

“The future president of CAF must be a person of absolute integrity,” Mosengo-Omba told the Senegalese press agency as the race hots up over who will take over from Ahmad Ahmad in March.

Of the four candidates, only the files of presidents Augustin Senghor and Jacques Anouma have so far been validated, with those of Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Patrice Motsepe of South Africa still requiring additional information, according to CAF’s Governance Commission.

Mosengo-Omba, who attended  last weekend’s general assembly of the zone A of the Union of West African Football Federations (UFOA) in Cape Verde, says that after the scandal-ridden regime of Ahmad, the new man at the helm must have the “moral integrity” to commit the development of football on the continent.

“His priority must be to develop African football and to listen to African federations,” he said.

“CAF and FIFA have common objectives. In this sense, FIFA is obviously interested in the CAF elections. FIFA  does not have a candidate because it does not vote (but) everyone knows that the president of CAF becomes vice-president of FIFA.”

FIFA of course has a vested interest and whichever ever Gianni Infantino supports will have a head’s start.

“FIFA cannot stand by without watching what is going on,” said Mosengo-Omba. “It’s normal. FIFA does not vote but it is not disinterested.”
