February 3 – Bayern Munich are the most clinical goal finishers in Europe’s Big 5 leagues, scoring on average every 5.3 shots.
An analysis of 31 European Leagues by the CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post ranks teams by the number of shots per goals.
“The most clinical team overall is Hamburger SV (one goal every 4.7 shots), followed by Olympiacos and Bayern Munich. At the opposite end, the highest figure was recorded for Belenenses (one goal every 20.5 shots),” finds the report.
Not surprisingly it is teams at the top or near the top of their domestic leagues that head the rankings. Spanish league leaders Atlético Madrid score every 5.4 shots, Inter Milan (6.0) is the most clinical team in the Italian Serie A while Leicester City (6.0) top the English Premier League clubs. AS Monaco lead French Ligue 1 (6.2).
Clubs at the bottom leagues correspondingly waste most chances on goal. In the Premier League 17 clubs score every 10.5 shots or fewer. In contrast, strugglers Fulham, Burnley and Sheffield United score on average every 13.3, 16.1 and 16.5 shots.
The CIES study also presents the percentage of shots taken from the opponent box and the average distance of shots. “For the former indicator, the proportions vary between from 70% for Dinamo Kyiv to only 41% for the Croatian side HNK Šibenik. For the average shot distance, the figures range from 14.2 meters for Viktoria Plzeň to 22.0 meters for the Serbs of FK Rad,” finds the report.
