AFC boosts referee education with launch of STAR programme

March 1 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has launched a new online match officials education programme designed to give member associations customisable refereeing resources as well as current with refereeing advances worldwide.

The AFC Refereeing STAR Programme will be added to the AFC’s already existing referee initiatives including the AFC Referee Academy, the AFC MA Refereeing Administration Project and teaching resources accessed via the AFC Refereeing 360 Online Platform.

AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John said: “The AFC Refereeing STAR Programme will help our match officials with their challenges and areas which require improvements. It is important that we embrace technology, and this new initiative will provide our officials with a sustainable digital educational plan.

The education system was created on the pillars of the acronym ‘STAR’: Support MAs with access to high-quality education and expert advice; Transform learning into an engaging and customisable experience; Adapt to the rapidly changing environment with sustainable solutions. and Rise by building resilience and turning challenges into opportunities.

Courses will cover topics within the categories of technical, fitness, teaching resources and administration, and will be conducted by a pool of trained coaches including referee instructors as well as retired and active referees.

“Our referees in Asia are renowned and have graced the world’s biggest stages but we want to raise the standards by educating and providing a platform for our match officials to continue learning and developing through this latest initiative,” said John.
