April 14 – Chile’s women took the final qualifying slot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic tournament after a 0-0 draw was enough to put them through from the inter-continental play-off against Cameroon.
Chile had taken a 2-1 lead into the second leg and against a Cameroonian side that needed to score twice – both matches were played in Antalya, Turkey, with the first leg designated as Cameroon’s home tie.
The Chileans have much to thank their captain for, PSG goalkeeper Christiane Endler, who made key saves against a lively Cameroonian team that had plenty of possession despite having a player sent off on 69 minutes.
Chile, who had qualified for their first women’s World Cup in France in 2019, have now qualified for their first Olympic tournament. They had made their way to the inter-continental play-off having finishing as runners-up at the 2018 Copa America Femenina to Brazil.
The 12 qualified nations for Tokyo 2012 are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China PR, Great Britain, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, USA and Zambia.
The draws for both the men’s and women’s Olympic Football Tournaments will be held by FIFA on April 21.
