UEFA pushes back Euros hosting deadlines for Munich, Bilbao and Dublin

April 20 – UEFA have postponed until Friday a final decision over whether they are dropping any host cities for this year’s delayed Euro 2020, with Munich, Bilbao and Dublin still in danger of being axed  if they can’t guarantee a limited number of  spectators.

A ruling was supposed to be made at yesterday’s executive committee meeting but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said European football’s governing body “postponed our final decision ” until the end of the week to allow time for final discussions “with the three cities which could be excluded”.

All had been given until Monday to provide UEFA with additional information on their plans for spectators but that deadline has now been extended.

One option is taking matches due to be played in Dublin, Munich and Bilbao and relocating them to other existing host cities although the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, says he will do “everything humanly possible” to ensure Spain keeps its four scheduled Euro games.

Bilbao and Dublin are each due to host three group matches and a round-of-16 game, while Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena is scheduled to stage three group matches and a quarter-final.

Rome was only confirmed as one of the 12 host venues last Wednesday when local authorities confirmed 25% of the 68,000-seat Stadio Olimpico could be used.

Eight other cities – Saint-Petersburg, Baku, Budapest, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Glasgow and London – are confirmed though the number of fans allowed into stadiums will vary.
