Concacaf Champions League still looks like Mexico’s to lose

May 21 – Mexico’s grip on the Concacaf Champions League does not look to be slipping with three LigaMX sides lining up for the 2021 semi-finals and one team from the US.

Concacaf has released the schedules for the two leg semi-finals that will CF Monterrey face Cruz Azul and Club America against Philadephia Union in August and September. The winners of semis will qualify for a single leg final in August.

The final will be played over a single leg in October.

Current champions Tigres UANL cemented Mexico’s domination of the Champions League last season after rallying to defeat Los Angeles FC 2-1 in the tournament’s final, extending LigaMX’s stunning winning streak in the competition to 15 years.

They qualified for the Club World Cup in Qatar held last February, eliminating Brazil’s Palmeiras 1-0 in the semi-final, becoming the first Concacaf club to reach the final and bidding to be the first club outside of both Europe and South America to win the competition. However, Bayern Munich eventually proved too strong for them in the final.

Winners of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League will qualify for the second Club World Cup this year, to be held in Japan in December.

The 2021 SCCL Semi-finals will be played as below:
