Liverpool open up boardroom to fan reps

May 25 – Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have confirmed that fans will be represented on the club board, becoming the third Big Six English clubs to implement the reform following the aborted European Super League (ESL) plan.

The Merseyside club were part of a cabal of 12 elite European clubs who wanted to breakaway from the football pyramid and establish the ESL to usurp the Champions League. Those plans quickly disintegrated following a wave of protest and some of the rebel clubs in England have responded to the concerns and complaints of their supporters by introducing fan representation at board level.

Liverpool join Chelsea and Tottenham in giving fan representatives a board room voice on fan issues and the decision-making process within the hierarchy of the club.

“The development follows a series of recent meetings with the Official Liverpool Supporters Trust, Spirit of Shankly, and will see the creation of a new engagement model that enables deeper consultation with supporters on fan-facing strategic decisions,” read a Liverpool club statement.

“This consultation process will be enshrined in the club’s Articles of Association and a legally binding Memorandum of Understanding between the club and the Official Liverpool Supporters Trust will be entered into, thereby ensuring supporters input on fan issues via structured dialogue. The Supporters Board will be launched ahead of the new season and will be made up of a group of supporters that represent the club’s diverse fanbase.”

It’s believed that the fans will have a degree of veto power at board level, but details still need to be fine-tuned.
