June 15 – Wembley will be allowed to host up to 45,000 fans for the semi-finals and final of the European Championship after the stadium was granted an exemption from a delay in the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.
The number of spectators will be increased from the 22,500 currently permitted for the group matches despite the government delaying the scrapping of social distancing in England by a further four weeks to July 19 amid rising cases of the covid delta variant (previously known as the Indian variant, where it was first discovered).
The first match to benefit will be the round of 16 game on June 29 that could feature England if they win their group.
Spectators have to provide proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative Covid-19 test to access the stadium.
“We want to gather further evidence on how we can open up all big events safely, and for good,” said Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden.
