August 20 – A promising Afghan footballer who played for the national youth team tragically fell to his death after trying to cling to a US plane airlifting residents out of Taliban-controlled Kabul, it has been confirmed.
The General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports of Afghanistan said 19-year-old Zaki Anwari (pictured) died in the mayhem that erupted at Kabul airport after attempting to hold on to the outside of the American military aircraft
The US Air Force said it was conducting a review of what happened as Afghan civilians ran alongside and around the plane before it took off.
US defence officials said the plane took off from the international airport in Afghanistan’s capital city with what is believed to be the highest number of people ever flown in the C-17, a military cargo aircraft that has been used by the US and its allies for nearly 30 years.
“It is with great sadness that Zaki Anwari, one of the players of the national junior football team of the country, died in a bad accident,” the directorate said in a Facebook post.
