September 24 – Manchester City, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and PSG will all retain their domestic league titles this season, according to data forecasts from the CIES Football Observatory. Real Madrid will take the Spanish title off Atlético.
The CIES Football Observatory has forecast who will finish top of Europe’s Big 5 leagues at the end of the season using a statistical model that includes the players’ experience, transfer fee investments to assemble squads, as well as each team’s performance in the last 365 days.
The model is not showing a huge amount of change from last season’s final positions.
“With respect to 2020/21, the only change from a champions perspective is supposed to take place in Spain, with Real Madrid finishing ahead of Atlético and Barcelona. In England, the top four would be the same as last season, with Tottenham fifth ahead of Everton. Norwich City, Watford and Newcastle United are the main candidates for relegation,” say the authors.
Elsewhere Juventus are predicted to only finish sixth in Serie A – Napoli will finish second behind Inter with AC Milan third. Wolfsburg will be runners-up to Bayern while PSG (something of a no-brainer prediction) will continue to dominate France. However, the statistical model does point to storied but financially struggling St Etienne being in the French relegation mix.
